Applying Asphalt Sealer
Is One Or Two Coats Better For An Asphalt Driveway
Great question!
The answer depends on which type of application.
Spray Application
When the sealer is sprayed on, it’s applied with a spray wand coming out of a tank. Usually these tanks are totes, or 300 to 500 gallon capacity tanks mounted on trailers.
If the sealer is being applied with spray equipment, then 2 coats of sealer is recommended.
Squeegee Application
When the sealer is applied using brush or rubber squeegees, it’s applied by either pouring it from buckets filled from the tank or from the hose out of the tank and then spreading it.
If it’s being applied by squeegees, then one heavy coat or two even coats can be applied.
Can You Put Driveway Sealer On Too Thick?
Yes! As a matter of fact, coal tar driveway sealer can actually damage your driveway if it’s sealed to frequently or if it’s applied too thick.
We replaced a driveway that was just 10 years old because of this! A contractor told a homeowner that they should seal their asphalt driveway every year. This ultimately made the driveway sealer way too thick.
When coal tar sealer get’s too thick, it tends to shrink and crack like a spider web. Very fine, small cracks in the sealer that expand and contract and just destroy the asphalt beneath. Over time it begins to look very similar to how soil at the bottom of a lake or pond looks when it dries up.
